Chinese may rue decision to scrap Olympic stadium roof

It was a moment of parsimony in the preparations for the most extravagant Olympic Games the world has ever seen. Six months after work began on the Birds Nest Stadium, the Chinese Government called a halt to the building works, to ask what now seems a most unlikely question. Wasn’t it all a bit too expensive?

Steel prices were rising, driven ever higher by the ravenous demand of a rampant Chinese economy. So high was the price that from Hong Kong to Gloucestershire, manhole covers were vanishing from roads, stolen for sale to unscrupulous scrap merchants.
